Antique Dentzel Stander Carousel Horse ,Circa 1890, from Atlantic City, NJ
Carousel Horse, Antique Wood Dentzel Circa 1890
This horse is a Dentzel Outer row Stander, early vintage circa 1890. This horse was carved circa 1890-1910 in the Dentzel Factory in New York.
It’s been in this family for at least 57 years, maybe as long as 60. As they recall this Dentzel stander was from the Atlantic City carousel, one of three. A friend of my father’s had purchased them giving as a gift for my brother and me to play on; as a little girl, I pretended he was my own horse--I called him Grayson. Grayson played a star role in many of my childish games, fantasies that took place out on the open range, far away from his prior carousel life. The other two, a zebra and a giraffe both in excellent condition, were sold over 40 years ago, the buyer unknown.
The photos in this series showing the metal pole are more recent. The metal pole was ordered and fabricated through Carousel Workshop I believe around 2011.
He is a stationary horse, never went up and down. He is moving in a Trotting position (opposite legs moving together).
Measurements are 61"x50"long x 13", all wood antique, original glass eyes. Standing horse, Head position is a Head down or Tucked head( glass eyes)...carved design on both the flank and breast strapping with swallow tail blanket and english style saddle with scroll on back of saddle. Some jewels are missing or have been replaced with reflectors these have all been removed. Horse hair tail.
He is in old Park paint, chipped, most of the paint is missing. Would have more colorful trim, maybe even gold or silver, and some more decorative painting. Newer reins and stirrups.
Includes black metal base and brass pole.
Condition issues, Wood looks to be in good shape glue has dried out and is separating. This horse will probably need a full restoration. (more photos available on request).
